ruffles reloaded

Still not my comfort zone but when I saw this jacket in the Burda magazine preview for the january issue 2012, I knew that I wanted to give it a go.

The pattern calls for a loosely woven heavy weight fabric and I knew just what to use: the boucle I got in Madrid, intended for the Isabel Marant jacket but as I didn't make it after planning it for 3 months, I knew I wasn't excited about it anymore and it wasn't going to happen.

The collar is so very dramatic, I sometimes have a hard time putting together an outfit. Also the wool fabric is cozy and warm but the size of the collar makes it difficult to wear it under a coat... But I make it work. Sometimes.

As suggested by the pattern instructions, I didn't line it but used leftover bits of bias tape to finish the seams Hong Kong style. Not the cleanest work but well enough.

My favorite part are the pockets, I guess. I love how they are almost disappear in the structure of the bouclé.

How would you style such statement piece?

  2. Ooooh! I love it. And I love your fabric choice. If I can't find the pattern here in the States, could I borrow it to trace the next time I visit my daughter in Berlin?

    1. Sure, but it'd be easier to just print it, I guess: Burdastyle offers the pattern online. Take a look: http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/012012-jacket-with-front-frills

  3. Pretty! And I really like the mismatched bias binding inside. Looks like it was totally intentional!

    1. I thought the same thing. It gives it a nice touch. I might have to make that a habit for my clothes.

  5. lovely.. how you finished edges of the ruffle part? if i recall well, burda suggests raw edges, but that won't do the trick with boucle, it frays too much.. and, i love love how inside of your jacket look :)

    1. You're right, there are 6 garthered fabric strips total, 4 cut on grain, 2 cut on bias. I ran a quick straight stitch on the bias strips to prevent the corners from fraying out and dissappearing. Similar to faux fur, the structure of bouclé hides the seam pretty well. The other strips are frayed, it works good but is handwash only. I also left the selvage on two of the strips, more for interest but of cause it also stabilises the edges.

  7. This is awesome! The moment I saw that ruffle neck pattern I favourited it - it's gorgeous. Congrats on making the front page of Burdastyle too! I actually really like the multi-coloured seam binding - wacky but I think it kinda fits the style! In which, of course, you look gorgeous. You fabric is totally kick-ass. Hope you get lots of wear out of it!

  8. I love this jacket- I made one in white pique wool blend: check it out it here I think it looks very chick and was not so hard to make. My only criticism were the sleeves, I thought they could have been made of one part- the two part style makes the elbow area sag ( on mine) , it must be due to the fabric- as yours look very well.
